VINTAGE 2017

Grapes: 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyards have a total area of 16 ha. Each year the 10 best ones are chosen for the production of Brunello. They are located in the northern area of Montalcino, the cooler one that has benefited most from global warming, 225 meters above the sea, on a small hill facing south, with a soil of silty clays. The vineyard is divided into 4 small plots planted between 2001 and 2006 with a density of 5,500 vines per hectare and trained on the spurred cordon with the biological system, that is, without the use of Sientesi chemicals. The average production is 55 quintals per hectare. Dry pruning takes place with the Simonit-Sirch system

Bottles produced: from 15,000 to 40,000 depending on the vintage. Every year only suitable grapes are selected for the production of Brunello, if the season is favorable they are in greater quantities, otherwise it is necessary to select.

Awards: Every year the Brunello receives very high marks from the most important international specialized press. These are the best rankings obtained: Wine Enthusiast 95/100 and 14th in the TOP 100 ranking in 2005; Wine Spectator 94/100; Wine Advocate 94/100; James Suckling 93/100; Jancis Robinson 17/20

Brunello is produced in Montalcino, the best area in the world for the Sangiovese grape. A type of vine cultivated in Montalcino for hundreds and perhaps thousands of years. Thanks to the climate and the soil, it has acquired specific characteristics: it produces few grapes, with small clusters and small berries. For this it is possible to create, in Montalcino, a great long-aging red wine, such as Brunello, using only one grape variety: Sangiovese. Brunello is the Italian wine that stays the longest in the cellar; its marketing begins four and a half years after the harvest, at least two of which are matured in oak barrels.

Casato Prime Donne, from which this Brunello di Montalcino comes, is a 40-hectare property where the ancestors of the current owner went hunting and honeymooning. It was part of a large estate owned by one of the most important families of Montalcino which for over four centuries has cultivated this land passing it from father to son and, in recent years, from mother to daughter because it belonged to Donatella Cinelli Colombini's grandmother, then of the mother and in the future it will belong to the daughter Violante Gardini.

However, it was the grandfather of the current owner, Giovanni Colombini, one of the pioneers in Brunello, who understood the vocation of the Prime Donne family for grape production and planted the first "specialized" vineyards as they called them at that time to distinguish them from the promiscuous ones where the peasants cultivated the vines together with the olive trees and wheat.

Originally the property was called Casato. The name was changed to Casato Prime Donne in 1998 when Donatella received the property and decided to create the first Italian winery with an entirely female staff. The cellarmen, the wine technician, the wine consultant Valérie Lavigne and even the marketing staff led by Violante Gardini, Cinelli Colombini Jr, who will lead the company in the future, are women
